Multistage–Flash (MSF) Unit Startup and Shutdown – 5-Day Course Outline

Course Overview

This 5-day course is designed for operating and technical personnel responsible for the safe and efficient startup and shutdown of MSF desalination units. MSF is a thermal seawater desalination process in which seawater is heated in a brine heater and then flash-evaporates through successive stages as pressure drops, while condensate is recovered as product water and concentrated brine is rejected. Safe MSF operation depends heavily on proper flow control, pressure control, corrosion awareness, and scaling management, making disciplined startup and shutdown practices essential. KROHNE

The course is especially relevant in KSA, GCC and Africa, where water security and desalination capability are strategic priorities. Saudi Arabia places water security, innovation and sustainable water management at the center of national priorities. The UAE Water Security Strategy 2036 emphasizes advanced technologies, resilience, storage, and reduced desalination-related emissions. In Africa, desalination is increasingly viewed as a water-security opportunity for coastal countries, while requiring stronger technical capacity, best practices and institutional readiness.
