Course Description:

Intensive preparation for API 653 Certified Aboveground Storage Tank Inspector examination. Covers inspection, repair, alteration, and reconstruction of aboveground storage tanks used in refineries, terminals, and petrochemical facilities throughout the GCC region.

Course provides comprehensive knowledge of API 650/653 standards, tank design and construction, corrosion mechanisms, foundation issues, settlement monitoring, NDE techniques, and fitness-for-service evaluation for atmospheric and low-pressure storage tanks.

  • Settlement and foundation issues

  • Shell distortion and out-of-plumbness

Day 3: NDE Methods & Thickness Assessment

  • UT thickness measurement of shell and bottom plates

  • Vacuum box testing for bottom plates

  • MFL (Magnetic Flux Leakage) scanning

  • Acoustic emission testing during hydrostatic testing

  • Tank bottom scanning technologies (MFE, SLOFEC)

  • Shell thickness evaluation and minimum thickness criteria

  • Settlement monitoring using optical levels and laser scanning

Day 4: Repairs, Alterations & Reconstruction

  • Bottom plate repair: Welded patches, overlays

  • Shell repair: Plate replacement, crack repair

  • Minimum thickness for repairs per API 653

  • Alterations: Nozzle additions, height increases

  • Tank rerating and capacity changes

  • Welding requirements per API 650 Annex B

  • Foundation repair and stabilization

  • Hydrostatic testing and fill rate calculations

Day 5: Calculations, Documentation & Exam Prep
